Men’s mental ill health is under reported, under diagnosed and under treated, a report commissioned by the European Commission says

  • Men’s mental health needs

  • Men’s mental ill health is under reported, under diagnosed and under treated, a report commissioned by the European Commission says.

The State of Men’s Health in Europe reviews men’s physical and mental health across all 34 European Union countries.

More women are diagnosed with depression and anxiety, but more men take their own lives and men are more likely to externalise their distress through substance abuse and antisocial/conduct disorder, the report says. Men are also at higher risk of work-related stress and stress symptoms such as fatigue and irritability.

The report says the causes of men’s higher mortality and physical and mental illness rates are often social and environmental and most can be prevented.
