Funding crisis
The problem of funding for counselling services has been highlighted by the need for NHS Tayside to make a one-off payment of £32,000 to National Counselling Service Tayside – part of CrossReach which has counsellors across Scotland – to clear its 150-long waiting list. But there is no plan for the NHS to pay for the service despite 75 per cent of clients being referred by GPs. Nick Gray, CrossReach’s head of counselling services, said: ‘The Government is promoting the use of more talking therapies yet they are not putting money in to them.’
